What Are Acne Scars?
Acne scars can come in many different forms including depressed indented scars, enlarged and stretched pores, and pigmented brown or red marks on the skin.
What Causes Acne Scars?
Acne scars form following the development of an acne lesion and any surrounding skin damage it causes. Depending upon how that acne lesion progresses depends upon how the scar may form. Cystic, deep acne lesions tend to cause substantial skin tissue damage that causes a break in the dermal tissues, resulting in a depressed scar. Even mild inflammatory acne lesions may lead to dyspigmentation with a brown mark or an increase in superficial vessels, leading to red flushed marks.
How Do You Treat Acne Scars?
It is important to note that not everyone with acne will necessarily develop acne scars. However it is important to seek medical advice on treating the acne to prevent inflammation and the potential for scars to form. If you do experience acne scarring we have a variety of treatment options available depending upon the type of scar that presents. For instance, brown pigmented scars can be treated with intense pulsed light (IPL) or the perfect peel; deep indented scars can be treated with Viscoderm Hydrobooster or dermal filler to lift out the skin depression; diffuse acne scarring across the skin can also be successfully improved with our published CellRenew Medical Microneedling treatments. Sometimes you may require a combination approach to smoothing out acne scars and that is why a consultation with one of our specialists is the most important aspect of your skin recovery journey.
